In 1945, the agency was appointed by Chubb and Sons and served almost exclusively as a Chubb agent until the mid 1980s. As the scope of the agency grew, first as a result of Mr. Shedd's son's efforts and more recently under Mr. Edward D. "Tim" Brown's ownership, appointments from other carriers have been sought and obtained.

In 1996, Brown Thayer Shedd became associated with Mr. Timothy M. Brown of New Canaan, CT and his company, Brown Thayer Shedd Insurance, Inc. This added approximately 40% to the total premium business of the Thayer Shedd operation. In 1999 the combined Thayer Shedd agencies bought Personal Financial Services, Inc. of New Canaan, thus adding an additional 20% to the revenue base. The combined agency represents the largest personal lines operation in the country for ACE and the 15th largest in the country for Chubb. Other significant agency representations are Travelers, Fireman's Fund, AIG, Middle Oak, Zurich.

In addition, we have several companies in the "Specialties Markets" which provide our clients with coverage for exposures such as Directors' and Officers' Liability, Errors and Omissions, and Professional Liability. We have found that developing strong underwriting relationships with the specialty companies is equally important as the ongoing interchange with our standard lines carriers. By the nature of the business, this part of it often takes particular skills in its development and application.

We write Life and Health Insurance through a number of associates each of whom has been chosen for their service-oriented approach to the business and, thereby, their compatibility with our own objectives in serving our clients' needs.

Our staff consists of five Customer Service Representatives and a bookkeeper. Mr. Brown is the sole stockholder of the agency and is primarily responsible for the marketing of our several products. He has had twenty nine years in the business having started with a large agency prior to assuming part ownership of Brown Thayer Shedd, Inc. in 1986. In January 1993, Mr. Brown purchased all the stock of the agency. He is a graduate of Avon Old Farms and Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. He is also a co-founder of Hackers for Hope.
